Amber Mark – Heatwave

First Google hit asks “Who the Hell is Amber Mark,” so hopefully someone SEOs that away soon…

Will Adams: Los Angeles has just experienced two heatwaves in quick succession. As in, tucking ice packs into the back of my shirt and keeping a fan pointed at my head through the whole night and managing to still break a sweat after taking a cold shower type of heat. Even if we got a third one starting tomorrow, this song would still be awesome.

William John: Amber Mark trades in her brand of luxuriant humidity for some scorching bacchanalia. I can’t recall anything as instantly pleasurable in music this entire year as Mark bellowing “HEAT! WAVE! SUMMER! EVERYDAY!” over irresistible, samba-inspired polyrhythm.

Katherine St Asaph: Suspicious as I generally am of SUDDEN FAME JUST BY POSTING A TRACK TO SOUNDCLOUD! stories, it’s still refreshing that this month’s benefactor is a singer-producer (not, crucially, another producer getting famous off an uncredited singer) who’s accomplished the miraculous feat of making a house track feel fresh in 2017.

Will Rivitz: Amber Mark is, I think, being foisted upon us listeners with the idea that she feels relatable enough that we’ll vibe with her music more deeply than just nodding our heads along. And the mildly misanthropic bent of 3:33am‘s piano-house bangers like “S P A C E” and “Lose My Cool” does exactly that (I’ve bonded with a friend over our respective losses of parents in middle school with “Monsoon” as the catalyst). “Heatwave,” by jettisoning the engaging lyrics and replacing them with clunkers like “Goddamn, I’m pissed to find out all the life I missed,” misses a mark the singer’s hit plenty of times.

Julian Axelrod: The groove is undeniable — heavy-hitting but light on its feet, a perfect storm of infectious percussion and flashy keys. Part of me wishes the whole thing, Mark’s vocal included, was just a bit looser and less restrained. But I’ve been dancing at my desk for the past 10 minutes, so who am I to complain?

Julian Baldsing: Every time Amber belts out “Heat! Wave!” I want to toss my not-nearly-long-enough hair back and emit the sort of carefree laughter that only leaves genetically blessed models in sunglasses commercials. But that’s the power of “Heatwave” — every element is designed to get you on your feet and loving life, from those rhythmic drums, to those hand claps, to those glorious bursts of synth. Amber Mark’s call-to-action is the peak, though, and it stops her from getting lost in the middle of her own party.

Leah Isobel: From the first beat, “Heatwave” never slows down, its dense rhythmic layers clattering and galloping with joyful abandon. Amber Mark’s lyrics take their cues from the track, and not the other way around; the second verse’s “damn, I’m pissed/ to find out all the life I’ve missed” reads like she’s just stepped into the club and realized that, fuck, she can actually enjoy herself, what was stopping her this whole time? It’s fall and the air is getting cooler, but get a couple of drinks in me and I’ll start sweating and moving like it’s still mid-July. “Heatwave” revels in the same kind of brief, escapist freedom.

Ashley John: Amber Mark layers drums and synths in a dizzying pattern only to ground it in lyrics of familiar, numb boredom. “Heatwave” is a sharp longing from the wrong side of the window, and Mark makes it feel irresistible.
