Blake Shelton ft. Ashley Monroe – Lonely Tonight

December 2, 2014

Is there a support group for country singers who can’t find anyone new to fuck? PUA seminars?…

Patrick St. Michel: Pretty dramatic for a booty call.

Alfred Soto: Shelton and Monroe, Miranda Lambert’s good friend and colleague, could bring a frisson to the proceedings. They settle for traditional us-against-the-world with not a single surprising lick.

Thomas Inskeep: Well, goddamn if Blake isn’t two-for-two with the singles from Bringing Back the Sunshine; now he’s making me wonder if I’ve been underrating him. “Neon Light” was a clever kiss-off, and this is a simple, sweet “I know we broke up, but I could still come over” song of loneliness and regret. It’s a tougher lyrical take on Lady A’s “Need You Now,” with Ashley Monroe providing the “me, too” not-exactly-counterpoint. “I could be there in 5/One more last time” reads as nothing but poignant to my ears, too.

Anthony Easton: I am mostly into how shameless this is — the guitars grinding, the percussion with that super ordinary beat, Shelton just begging a pretty girl to fuck him for one night and then having that pretty girl provide pretty insignificant backing vocals. That the woman singing is one of the more talented artists coming out of Nashville, her sidelining is perhaps the thing here that requires the most chutzpah.

Sabina Tang: The romcom chemistry of “You Ain’t Dolly” still echoes, but the film’s verve has flagged as it approaches the sappy denouement speech. A pity, as this could have been a transcendent red-wine weeper a la “Need You Now” if it’d retained more of Ashley Monroe’s POV. There are worse nights in with Netflix, though.

Brad Shoup: Blake’s probably the one dude in country who could make a song about exes hooking up funny. Not that he goes that route here; he and Monroe just grit their teeth and move from the front door to the bed as quickly as possible.
