Jer Fairall: In the alternate version of history where Vampire Weekend were the new Nirvana, a version alternate enough that popular culture had not become so fragmented that being the new Nirvana still really meant something, these guys would sorta be like the new Stone Temple Pilots. There’s nothing particularly special about this, in other words, but it does sometimes seem like a nicer place to live.

Iain Mew: Not everyone from Sunderland is the same, not everyone from Sunderland is the same, not everyone from Sunderland is the same… no, in this case it is unavoidable. If I wanted a Futureheads song without the same frenetic energy or sense of fun I’d listen to, well, I’d listen to The Futureheads these days.

Martin Skidmore: I guess they would like to sound like ’80s indie, maybe Postcardish material, if they were more skilled at playing and could write some tunes.

Jonathan Bogart: I could be listening to the JoBoxers.

Alfred Soto: “We’re waiting outside for you to come out tonight,” the chorus reminds us in clipped English that the class of ’77 would have recognized. But this single stops before nostalgia begins; it doesn’t even register as homage.

Tom Ewing: A scruffy, scrawny, scrap of a record – not without a skiffly charm but barely worth a second listen unless you’re very invested in this kind of sound.
[4]
Zach Lyon: Not actually a Frankie Sandford project like I was expecting (hoping?) but quite lovable! It would be nothing without the lead’s Fred Schneider vocals, which is also all it really needs.
[7]
Anthony Easton: Fun, but this is not making a stand about anything.
