HVME – Goosebumps

We get 1.12 less goosebumps than last time…

Thomas Inskeep: Terrible EDM will never die, with or without Travis Scott source material.

John S. Quinn-Puerta: On the one hand, it’s a perfectly functional dance remix. On the other hand, it sounds like the trailer for an R rated action thriller. Neither of those are particularly appealing to me in early 2021.

Oliver Maier: “Deep house rework of a Travis Scott song” as a concept sounds like musical poison (or NyQuil), so this being a serviceable slab of gym fodder instead is a relative success. The more recent mix, released last month with Scott’s blessing, is an improvement over the sloppy 2020 version too. Still, it’s hard to see the point. Trying to make Travis Scott sound broodier and more manufactured than he already does is like splashing black paint over a black canvas and hoping it will look noticeably darker.

Julian Axelrod: I can’t get mad about a DJ stapling a pitched-down Travis Scott hit from the second Obama administration to a dusty house breakdown from the first Obama administration and coming away with a hit — that’s just good business. But if you’re going to fuck with the vocals, really fuck with the vocals! Bump it up a few octaves! Replace him with Alexa! Make him sound like Gilbert Gottfried! If your Travis Scott remix is sleek enough to pass for Travis Scott canon, you’re doing it all wrong.

Samson Savill de Jong: You know those goosebumps you get when listening to something really great? This song is the opposite of that feeling.

William John: Thanks be to god that with “Ride It” well and truly having run its course, there’s another doomy, anonymous, boring murmuration to come and pick up the slack.
[3]

Alfred Soto: The times have created nostalgia even for austere Eurofestival sleaze.

Katherine St Asaph: …Sure, fine, I’ll allow it; my long, unfortunate history of crushing and goosebumps has made me wear out far worse songs than this.
