Luke Combs – When It Rains It Pours

Temps will start off warm but you’re gonna see a big chill by the end of the post…

Alfred Soto: A couple extra points for the assured storytelling and the skill with which Luke Combs sings gnarly phrases like “ex future mother-in-law,” a couple points deducted for turning the wife/girlfriend into the villain who doesn’t understand why he stays up with buddies all night and apparently doesn’t like it when he plays Lotto.

Ashley John: Self aware, funny country music from a man with a beard in 2017 sounds like a pipe dream. And yet, Luke Combs manages to exude charisma while turning the stereotypical breakup song upside down. Combs borrows a bit from Chris Stapleton’s coarse voice but takes none of his seriousness, making this song far more likeable. “When It Rains It Pours” is upfront about being an asshole and then continues to do so. You can just picture Combs shrugging, smirking, and knocking back the rest of his beer as the song fades out.

Thomas Inskeep: Lyrically, I don’t love this, and the gender politics on display aren’t super attractive. But musically, I do love it; this is couuuuuntry music, and Combs’s voice pairs with it perfectly — his drawl is just perfect. Split the difference.

Joshua Minsoo Kim: I’m fine with a bit of post-breakup celebration but after all this good fortune, the likelihood of Luke Combs acknowledging his shortcomings is slim to none. If you ask me, that’s incredibly unlucky.

Will Adams: After suffering through all the charmless bragging and improbable fortune, I’m beginning to suspect that she was the lucky one in this situation.

Ramzi Awn: It’s hard to ruin a fine modern country instrumental. But when it rains bad lyrics, it pours. Combs almost triumphantly attempts reaching out to his Hooters fanbase. He deserves a point for sheer commitment.

Stephen Eisermann: In case you ever wondered what straight, white, Trump supporting men think about when their girlfriend leaves them after partying all night with “the boyzzzzzzz” and not checking in with their significant others, Luke Combs has got you covered. Problem is, I don’t think anyone other than straight, white, Trump supporting men care to listen to a song that lacks this much self-awareness. “BuTTTtttTTT STEpheeenNNNN, WHY DO YOU ASSUME HE’S THE BAD GUY PARTYING?!! MAYBE SHE’S JUST NAGGING A LOT.” Fair point and I might’ve given Luke the benefit of the doubt had he not started the song with “bitching and moaning” and then followed it up with a claim about how lucky he was to get the “last spot” in the Hooters parking lot. Yeah fam, this guy REALLLLLY respects women and I’m sureeeee she deserved to be ridiculed and painted as a gold digger for leaving little ole Luke. Except he doesn’t, she doesn’t, and all I want to do right now is brainstorm ways to combat the blatant misogyny often found in bro-country.
