Dinosaur Pile-Up – Birds and Planes

August 17, 2010

In case you’re wondering, no, there isn’t a proper video for this, because they did a thing where they got fans to do short clips that they were then going to compile into a video except that hasn’t happened for some reason so here’s a photo of three blokes from Leeds standing in front of a wall because that’s about as good as we can get…

Jonathan Bogart: Holy shit, is it 1993 already? Sweet!
[8]

Alfred Soto: It’s 1992, and dinosaurs rule the earth. The brontosaurus riff kicks up as impressive a head of steam as, I don’t know, Jesus Lizard. But grunge is dead.
[6]

Iain Mew: All of a sudden it’s 2000 and I’m sitting in my bedroom with my brother playing PS1 snowboarding games and listening to the Evening Session with Steve Lamacq. We’re actually waiting for JJ72 live from Maida Vale or something similar to come on, but this will song will certainly pass the time very agreeably in the meantime and… ah, they’ve made it just slightly too crunchy and broken the illusion. Nice memories though.

Alex Macpherson: This is the kind of music my contemptible student neighbours, with whom I have been engaged in an all-out WAR this summer, always blast at top volume. Yelling “turn that fucking bullshit off or I’ll kill you” out of the window worked last time. Anyway, not only is it awful in itself, the empirical evidence also suggests that it’s music for wankers.

Martin Skidmore: I know nothing about this lot, but the grunge playing is nicely energetic and aggressive. The singing is a bit bland, and there isn’t much of a song in there, but the thunderous guitars make up for a lot.
[7]

Chuck Eddy: I take it this is British lads’ pathetic current idea of “rocking out”? So actually sounding like a rock band would of course be too much to ask. But at least it’s loud, and has a tune amidst all its clatter. First reaction: “Either Blur-ry or just blurry, can’t decide which.” Second: “Jesus and Mary Chain are never gonna die, are they?”
[6]

Maura Johnston: Oh shit, are we up to the part of the ’90s revival where people are inspired to “pay tribute to” Flop? Yessssssss.
[7]

Mallory O’Donnell: So, apparently there’s this band called Nirvana, and…

John Seroff: If I’m counting right, grunge should be in its third generation. No surprise that, like anything else left to sit unexercised for too long, it’s atrophied and sagging. The appallingly named Dinosaur Pile-Up don’t offer much of a workout with the rote and unpleasant “Birds and Planes”; these whippersnapper Faux Fighters’ hooch is so watered down that grandpas like me can drink it all day without catching a buzz.
[4]

Erick Bieritz: The Pixies had better start-stop chops, and the Foo Fighters did a better job of appropriating it and muscling it up. The spate of UK bands bringing back bits of 20-year-old alt rock has produced some good songs, but “Birds & Planes” is more of a reminder of the revival’s limitations.
[4]

David Raposa: Wow — did not expect to hear a band (UK or otherwise) do so right by this particular strand of power-popping Amerindie, tho the hint of McLusky-esque vitriol seething under this gives it a little extra pep. If this write-up features the highest score & kindest words this track receives amongst TSJ regulars, color me unsurprised. Posies & Lotion fans, stand up and cross your arms!
