The 1975 – Love Me

Not an edited title! (I think…)

Alfred Soto: The electric rhythm guitar and lack of affect with which they mix the drums suggest heavy listening to Bowie’s regrettable “Fame ’90” remix, or, for all I know, Hipsway.
[5]

Micha Cavaseno: Every so often, all these retro-80s singles actually hit the true essence of that era instead of sounding like some weird muto-idealized version that sounds like nothing of value (remember Hot Hot Heat? What in the world was that supposed to be like?). Of all the bands, The 1975 managed to actually land that feeling.

Thomas Inskeep: A riff that reminds me of nothing so much as the Human League’s “Swang,” lamely utilized in the service of a band who forty years ago would’ve been Mud. As edgy as a glass of skim milk.
[3]

Brad Shoup: Glad they’re getting their “Gunch” on, I guess, but we’re catching them on their way down, grasping at some “Do You Want To”-style wryness. They end up clutching their nuts.
[3]

John Seroff: In some alternate reality, there must be a world where “starts out Talking Heads, ends up Huey Lewis and The News” is a compliment. Not here, though; the wonky opening twenty seconds bought a lot of goodwill from me that was fast undone by Healy’s vocals.
[5]

Anthony Easton: The trills around 2:29 are nice, as is the production that sounds like it could come from a B-list sitcom or a C-list cop drama. The vocals fall flat and don’t keep up with the noise of the production, though.

Scott Mildenhall: “…And Barmy Aunt Boomerang will be back at the same time next week on CBBC One. Coming up at 4:35 we’ve got the consistently dreadful Wild House, but first, a new series featuring a guy whose mum is Denise Welch and dad is Tim Healy! His name is Matt, and with The 1975 he’s going to tell you all you need to know about everything from the world wide web to celebs in a way so heavy-handed that you, late 90s kids TV viewer, will feel infinitely patronised. Great theme tune though!”
