Michael Hong: Khalid’s generic template for anodyne R&B was probably a big influence on what ends up being more #mood than song.

Katherine St Asaph: Miles and piles of ballad.

Alfred Soto: Keep your therapy and acoustic guitar to yourself.

Edward Okulicz: There’s the start of something good here — the first few seconds suggest the song wants to be “More Than Words,” but Gatie’s mopey delivery suggests that if he’s delicate, it’s probably a vitamin deficiency or something.

Joshua Minsoo Kim: It obviously reeks of forced sentimentality, but the vocal melodies are decent enough for me to understand why this is a hit. Would have preferred percussion that didn’t sound so paltry though, or if more emphasis was put on that faint squealing sound.

Iain Mew: The pedal steel at the start and the hazy string samples at the end tell of a more interesting production than the forced vulnerability in between. Forced vulnerability is the order of the day though, and despite the song being “It’s You,” we find out more about 1) his exes 2) his delicacy 3) his ongoing pain. Pleading and sickly with no hint of the unhealthiness of making this the basis for things with You, it drowns in self-pity.
