Nobody’s perfect, Céline’s gotta work it…

Alfred Soto: I zinged Halsey for recording pop incommensurate with her profile and intelligence. Recording what is essentially a Halsey song, Céline Dion sticks to the conventions of modern pop: let the keyboards fall into place around a thesis statement without supporting evidence.

Wayne Weizhen Zhang: It turns out the third or fourth single off a Kelly Clarkson, P!nk, or Katy Perry album sung by Céline Dion still sounds pretty decent!

Kayla Beardslee: There’s probably a more compelling track buried in here, but the production isn’t doing Dion any favors, especially in the chorus: the harmonies are pretty, but the space between her vocals feels too empty, especially when surrounded by the generic instrumental. The lyrics are also a letdown — you can see “before I can love you / I need to learn to love myself” coming from a mile away.

Will Adams: It’s so odd to hear Céline of all people try to sell a song as underwritten (that non-existent chorus) and flat (that mid-tempo chug) as this. For a song that’s seemingly about embracing one’s own insecurities, this is perfectly content to be as inoffensive and crowd-pleasing as possible.

Josh Buck: I’ve been holding onto this gift card for the Cheesecake Factory for like a year, so when I finally go in to use it, I’m excited to know this song will be playing.

Joshua Minsoo Kim: “I got my own imperfections.”
