Leah Isobel: This kind of clownish dark-burlesque deal is never really my preferred mode; it always communicates a ~wElCuM 2 mY tWiStEd MyNd~ sense of self-satisfaction. I do appreciate the breathless momentum with which this rips through those tropes, but the glossy superfine textures don’t really serve the vibe. I want a creepy and ramshackle song to sound like it’s on the verge of collapse instead of sleek and state-of-the-art.

Julian Axelrod: This song has the same frantic energy as one of those ads you get during a phone game where the volume is crazy loud for no reason and the tiny skip button is constantly moving around the screen. UPDATE: I’m just now learning this is the theme song from Chainsaw Man, which is not the name of a phone game like I previously thought.

Jel Bugle: I liked this one — it has that nice sinister circus/showtune sound that you only find in J-pop. It’s probably an acquired taste.

Nortey Dowuona: The piano glissandos are good? Avada Kedavras, I guess? Sigh.

Joshua Lu: Electro swing is one of those genres that I will always enjoy, and the escalating energy of “Iris Out” is a fitting match for the maximalist gore of its accompanying film. The moments where Yonezu takes his foot of the gas pedal are puzzling — any moment of my life spent not hearing electro swing is a moment wasted — but there’s still enough chaos shoved in this song to make me want to merge without looking.

Ian Mathers: Okay, maybe I need to finally get around to watching Chainsaw Man.

Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: Just a good old fashioned banger that sounds like someone demolishing a Spirit Halloween with high explosives.

  1. Anime? On my music snob blog? It’s more likely than you think! I can’t shake the feeling that this is two songs I would have loved on their own smashed together into a frenetic mess that does neither any favors. [4]
