Nana nana na come on…

David Allun Jones: A long-married couple finally get a weekend away from the kids and opt to spend it by reigniting their freak at an underground sex club, role-playing as wealthy dripping-in-Chanel strangers who eye each other across the room as they flirt with (but don’t touch) other horned-up patrons. Just when the playful jealousy reaches peak levels, they quickly depart and bone each other’s brains out at the nearest hotel. Does all that necessarily track with the English translations I’ve found on “Sexy Nana?” No, but that’s the Showtime After Dark image this slinky little gem (and Aya’s seductive “na-naaaaaa” exhalations) conjure in my mind. Body roll excellence.

Nortey Dowuona: Both Abi Genie and Joe Dwet File are producers capable of the smooth, languid cool that Aya often traffics in and the heavy, spacebound snarl of La Rvfleuze, yet once both link on the same song, the qualities that allow one to shine are stepped on. Aya is allowed the comfort with the beatwork to riffle through her silky flows that feel smooth but insubstantial compared to La Rvfleuze, and Rvfleuze is clinging to his masc battering ram raps which feel even more jumbled and compressed than compared to his own work. A match made in heaven on paper but unable to produce when in action. Shame, really.

Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: Extremely funny how Aya Nakamura asks if her counterpart needs an instruction manual for sexy women only for La Rvfleuze to respond with a chorus and verse that reveal that he desperately needs one; you don’t get this combo of unintentional comedy and intentional groove just anywhere, folks!

Harlan Talib Ockey: The pace slumps as we get into La Rvfleuze’s verse, as he almost completely forgets about the Sexy Nana at hand. He’s far from the first artist to get lost on a tangent, and his lyrics arguably match the menacing edge of the production better than Aya Nakamura’s. But La Rvfleuse careens into his detour after just one line with no real buildup, and his verse goes on long enough to graduate from “standard digression” to “baffling.” When Aya leads back into the chorus, it almost sounds like she’s reminding him, hey, this song is supposed to be about a Sexy Nana?

Julian Axelrod: I love everything about “Sexy Nana” except the part where they say “Sexy Nana,” but I’d love to hear Latto to do a sexy French-to-English remake of this like like Olivia Wilde with The Invite.

Lichelle: Comment dit-on “I’m catching a vibe?” Aya Nakamura is very familiar to me, La Rvfleuze less so, but this is a banger regardless. I’ve always preferred the MC Solaar verse on Missy Elliott’s “All n My Grill” to Big Boi’s, further proof that “going the fuck off” is universally recognizable even if the language isn’t, and “Sexy Nana” continues that tradition fluently.
